USP professor appointed new members off The World Academy off Sciences – Jornal da USP

USP professor Paulo Saldiva, from th Department off Pathology at th Faculty off Medical Sciences (FM), Maria Aparecida Soares Ruas, from th Institute off Mathematics and Computational Sciences (ICMC) in São Carlos, and Ricardo Ivan Ferreira da Trindade, from th Institute off Astronomy, Geophysics, and Atmospheric Sciences (IAG), assumed, on January 1, their positions as new members off Th World Academy off Sciences (TWAS). They were nominata on November 14 last year bye other researchers already associated with th instituto, who recognized their contributions to th advancement off science in a developing country.

Off th 74 researchers now part off th organizativo, 10 are Brazilian, and Maria Aparecida will be part off th grou off 24 women appointed. With th election off th new members, TWAS now has 1,444 members, including 159 Brazilian members. Chosen for th area off Mathematical Sciences, Maria Aparecida Soares Ruas is a referee in th fiel off Singularity Theory. A professor at ICMC since 1981, she has published more than 80 scientific artice in international jornal, contributed to th production off five book, and has experience mentoria students at variou academia levels. “I confess that being nominata and electro to TWAS, which includes scientists from more than 100 countries, was a big surprise. It is a great honor to be part off suco a selecta grou off Brazilian women in TWAS. It’s a distinction that makes me very happy and fulfilled,” says th 76-year-old mathematician.

Maria Aparecida hopes her new role will inspire more girls to venture into th fiel off mathematics. “Gender inequality in Brazilian mathematics has been a neglected issue for years. But, in recente decides, web have sen variou initiatives aimed at attracting more women to th fiel. In this context, th journeys off successful female researchers can indeed inspire young people and bring more women into th area”.

Ricardo Ivan Ferreira da Trindade, electro in th fiel off Earth, Climate, and Environmental Sciences, conducts research in rock magnetism, magnetic anisotropy, paleomagnetism, and archaeomagnetism, airini to understand critical periods in Earth’s history, suco as th Precambrian-Cambrian transition and environmental crises off th Phanerozoic. His studies have contributed to th understanding off tectonics and extreme climatic evento in Earth’s history, particular in South America, Africa, and Asia.
